Diaries, 1870-1940.

Diaries kept daily by Georgine Holmes (later) Thomas from 1888-1940 and a small vol. of notes for 1870. The early diaries were in Kentucky and outside Cincinnati where she lived with her father and siblings and concern her charitable work, music and language lessons, and personal business, including her feelings during her courtship with Dr. Charles H. Thomas who she married in 1893. After her marriage, the couple resided in Covington, Ky. and New Orleans until his death in 1904. At the age of 61, Thomas took piano lessons and went on a barnstorming tour of the U.S. and Canada. In 1898 and from 1917 on, she spent her summers in East Gloucester, Mass. She was a frequent visitor to Europe, spending time in Germany, Italy, and Greece, with long and frequent stays in Paris. During World War I, she spent some time in London caring for wounded soldiers. She took a trip to the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, and the California Redwoods in 1925. After 1929, she no longer spent time in Europe and returned to her home base in New York. She was an avid patron of the arts attending numerous lectures and concerts.
